Standalone versus PC-tethered. Pick by room, budget, and whether you will actually wear it twice a week.

VR collects dust when the setup takes twenty minutes. Buy the headset that matches the room you have, not the one in the trailer.

Standalone first

Meta Quest-class standalone is still the default for most people: no gaming PC, enough fitness and social apps, a store you may dislike but can actually use. If you already have a strong PC, a PC-first headset can look better and cost more in cables and play space.

Room and budget

You need a clear floor and a ceiling fan that will not kiss the controllers. If the room is a studio apartment, pick something you can pack in a drawer. Skip the $1,000 kit if you tried a friend’s headset once and felt sick.

Who should skip VR this year

Skip it if you will not block two evenings to learn the guardian boundary. Skip it if motion sickness hit you in five minutes and you hated every minute. This is entertainment hardware, not a personality.
