The WH-1000XM5 is still the default office-and-commute headset I suggest when someone wants strong ANC and a boring daily app. It is not the most durable hinge in Sony’s line, and it is not a studio mixer.

Comfort after hour three

The clamps are easier than the XM4 for glasses. Heat builds on a summer walk. If you run hot, an open-back is the honest answer and a worse commute tool. Ear pads are replaceable — budget a pair after a year of daily use.

Call quality in a noisy kitchen

Better than average Bluetooth, still not a boom mic. The other person will hear the blender. For standup-heavy jobs, a wired USB headset on the desk and the XM5 for the train is the grown-up split.

Who should buy a previous generation

XM4 if you need a fold-flat case in a tiny bag and you find XM5 used prices silly. XM5 if you want the current ANC and multipoint that just works with a laptop plus phone. Skip if you need a 3.5 mm cable every day — the dongle life is real.

Who this is for

Daily noise-cancelling for trains, offices, and video calls where you can live with a short boom-less mic. Skip it if you mix music, need a replaceable battery, or you lose $350 headphones twice a year.

  1. Helpful. I skipped the flagship and bought last year’s model after the price history section.

  2. I commute on a noisy train. After three months the clamp is still comfortable, but I would wait for a sale unless you take calls every day.
