4K on a 14-inch laptop is a flex that can cost you two hours of battery and a hotter lap. It is worth it for photo work and some video. It is a bad default for writers who live in cafes.
When 4K pays off
Color work, huge spreadsheets you actually zoom, and external-monitor-free editing. Look at brightness in nits, not just pixel count. A dim 4K panel is a worse screen than a bright 1600p.
The battery tax
If the vendor will not publish a 4K SKU battery test separately from the 1080p SKU, assume the marketing slide used the cheaper panel. OLED blacks are lovely and still burn in if you pin a taskbar for three years.
Who should skip 4K
Skip it on a travel machine. Skip it if you plug into a 27-inch 1440p monitor at home anyway. Buy RAM and SSD first; you cannot upgrade a panel as easily as a stick of memory on the few machines that still allow it.
