The job is simple: fewer trackers and popovers, without breaking the bank login or the docs site you get paid to use. Aggressive lists that block CDNs will waste an hour of allowlisting.
What to install
uBlock Origin on Firefox is still the adult choice: default lists, no “acceptable ads” program. On Safari, a reputable content blocker from the App Store plus iCloud Private Relay is a calmer path. Chrome users should read the manifest-v3 limits before expecting 2019 behavior.
Do not stack five blockers
One engine. Extra “adblock plus antivirus plus coupon” extensions are how you get a hijacked new tab. If a site breaks, disable the blocker for that domain, not for the whole browser.
Who should skip it
Skip hobby filter lists at work if IT already ships a proxy. Skip anything that asks you to “disable encryption to filter HTTPS.” That is not an ad blocker; that is a man-in-the-middle.
