Refurb laptops are smart when a reputable refurbisher replaces the battery, wipes the disk, and offers a return. They are not smart when a marketplace photo hides a 61% battery and a cracked corner.

Grade language

Seller “excellent” is not a standard. Ask for battery cycle count and a photo of the ports. Business ThinkPads and Latitudes still refurb well. Gaming laptops refurb as lottery tickets because cooling paste is a maybe.

The policy that matters

30-day returns with buyer-paid return shipping can erase the discount. Prefer 30 days with free returns on DOA. Confirm Windows license is legitimate.

Who should buy new

Buy new if you need a warranty you can walk into a store with. Buy refurb if you can inspect, you want last-year hardware, and you will run your own backup from day one.
